Russians consider Yuri Gagarin the greatest Russian idol of the 20th century. According to survey results, the cosmonaut’s rating has risen 5% over the last 10 years. In 1999, 30% of Russians ranked him as the greatest Russian idol.
Rounding out the top three is Commander and Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov. However, the number of Russians who consider him an idol has fallen slightly – from 26% in 1999 to 20% in 2010.
Three percent of respondents consider the first president of the U.S.S.R. Mikhail Gorbachev an idol.
