Olga Sobur, a 21-year-old girl from Rostov, started school this January. Nobody had thought about her education before. “It is outrageous that nobody cared,” the school’s headmaster said.Olga has worked since she was a child, taking up porterage, cleaning and sales jobs. Meanwhile, in her free time she learned to read, write and count. She still makes mistakes, though.
“She is quite good at Russian but has a hard time with maths,” her teacher Larisa Sklyarova says.
This first grader has a specially designed curriculum and can sit exams without attending classes with the other kids. Her teachers think that by the end of May, Olga will have finished her elementary school program and that she will be able to get her secondary school certificate in two or three years.
