A new surface-to-air missile system has begun alert duty in Russia’s armed forces. The S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name S-21 Growler) can destroy all types of targets from medium-range ballistic missiles to aircraft.
The military says the system is another step towards the upgrade of Russian air defenses and a more sophisticated strategic defense system for the country.
According to Vadim Volkovetsky, chief of Russian Air Force headquarters, there is no better missile system in the world than the Triumf in terms of performance specifications.
No problems have been foreseen in the new system, military experts told correspondents at a press conference at a base in Elektrostal. Specialists from Almaz-Antei are working on training personnel at Air Force training centers.
The S-400 will not be exported yet. For now, the Triumf surface-to-air missile will be delivered only to the Russian armed forces. Two more units will be deployed in 2010.
