The Russian women's ice hockey team lost a shootout against Switzerland to finish sixth at the Olympics in Vancouver.

The Russian women's ice hockey team lost a shootout against Switzerland to finish sixth at the Olympics in Vancouver.

The fifth-place match was 1-1 at the end of regulation on Monday night in Canada and neither side could find a winning goal in overtime, but after Russia opened the shootout with a goal, Switzerland responded with scores for their second and third skaters, taking the shootout 2-1.

The Russians scored first, Tatyana Burin netting on a powerplay in the 10th minute, but with five minutes to go in the second period Stephanie Marty leveled the scores, this time with Russia shorthanded.

The Russians racked up 16 penalty minutes to 10 for the Swiss, but Irina Gashennikova only made 25 saves, against 32 for Florence Schelling in the Swiss goal.

The final will take place on Thursday, with home favorite Canada hoping to avenge their men's loss to the United States on Sunday, while Nordic rivals Sweden and Finland will faceoff for the bronze - the Swedes won that matchup in the men's tournament.

Canada has won its four games in the competition by a total of 46-2, while the United States' aggregate score is 40-2.

China's women won the seventh-place match against Slovakia 3:1 earlier on Tuesday.
