Inland of Russia Kuril Islands safe from tsunami threat

A tsunami roused by a devastating quake in Chile poses no threat to inner lands of the Kuril Islands in Russia's Far East, local emergencies services said.

According to previous reports, people were being evacuated from the islands as waves measuring up to two meters were forecasted to hit the regional coast.

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Chile in the early hours of Saturday killing over 300 people, according to local authorities.

The tremor occurred some 89 kilometers (55.3 miles) to the north of Chile's second largest city Concepcion, some 341 kilometers (212 miles) from the capital Santiago.
