Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak underwent a gall bladder operation at a hospital in Germany's Heidelberg, the Egyptian television reported on Saturday.
The doctors said that the surgery went well and the 81-year old Egyptian leader was already conscious and talked to his family members in an intensive care unit.
Mubarak was diagnosed with "severe inflammation of his gall bladder" during a working visit to Germany although he showed no signs of sickness during talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday.
Before the operation, Mubarak temporarily handed over power to Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif. Mubarak, who took office in 1981, has never had a vice president.
