The first group of cosmonauts was formed by March 1960. There were 20 of them: nine from the air force, six from air defense and five from naval aviation.A loneliness test – ten to fifteen days spent in a soundproof chamber in complete isolation – was included in the medical and biological preparation of the future cosmonauts. In the summer of 1960, a select group of six future cosmonauts continued hands-on preparations for the first flight. The final choice was not made until four days before the launch, on April 8, 1961.
On April 12, the world learned the name of the man who made a circuit around Earth in the Vostok-1 spacecraft: Yury Gagarin.
