An Israeli soldier has been killed by friendly fire during a shooting with Palestinians on the border with the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army's press service has said.
The shooting between Israeli forces, including a tank crew on foot and patrol guards, and three Palestinians who reportedly crossed into Israel through the border with Gaza, occurred on Monday.
The Palestinians were reportedly detained as a result.
The Gaza Strip has been the subject of an almost continuous Israeli blockade since the radical Islamic group Hamas took control of the enclave in the summer of 2007, ousting President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement in a bloody five-day war.
