The first performance of the Kodo drummers from Japan was held at Moscow’s International House of Music. The name, Kodo, can be translated as “heartbeat,” the primal source of all rhythm.
The Kodo percussion ensemble uses the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko. They adjust the rhythm to the heartbeat of the players. The drummers gradually increase the tempo, bringing it to a plateau, after which the rhythm starts slowing down.
The performance involves dozens of taiko drums, the largest of which weights about 500 kilograms. The taiko drum has been used for 14 centuries, initially for religious rituals and also to warn the Japanese about wars or public meetings. But now the taiko drums are part of a popular worldwide show.
