Two policemen died on Saturday in a shootout in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan when officers stopped a car that another policeman was driving, a law-enforcement source said.
The member of Dagestan's law enforcement agencies told RIA Novosti that according to preliminary information police stopped the car for a routine check, but an argument between the driver and the police led to shots being fired.
"During the shooting, one policeman and the driver of the stopped car, who also turned out to be a law enforcement officer, were killed. Another policeman was wounded," the source said.
Investigators in Dagestan said a criminal case had been opened and confirmed that two police had been killed, but said the details were still unclear.
"The circumstances of the incident are being clarified," an investigators' spokesman said.
Security has been stepped up in the North Caucasus following Wednesday's double bombing in Dagestan, which killed 12 people, most of them police.
