Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-hewn town and one of the first towns in Georgia. Uplistsikhe was cut out of rock 12km east of the town of Gori, on the left back of the Kura (Mtkvari) River. It dates back to the late second, early first millennium B.C. The town experienced several periods of boom and decline and was finally abandoned in the 19th century. This ancient town is a unique multi-layer architectural treasure and one of the most significant Georgian monuments.
“Where the Kura and Aragva flow together in tumultuous race/ Like sisters meeting in embrace…” The town of Mtskheta (founded in the second half of the first millennium B.C.) at the confluence of the Aragva and Kura (Mktvari) rivers.
Jvari is a Georgian Orthodox monastery standing at the top of a mountain near Mtskheta. According to a legend, Saint Nino placed the Grapevine Cross that she received from Virgin Mary here. The monastery is an architectural masterpiece and the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Georgia.
Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is the seat of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia in Mtskheta. It has been the main Georgian cathedral for a thousand years and is a World Heritage Site. It remains one of Georgia’s main religious symbols.
