Moscow authorities conclude contracts with some graffiti artists on painting images in certain places. The beginning of spring is traditionally marked with a boost of creativity on the city walls, because the weather conditions mean much for the street painters.
There are some 100 sophisticated graffiti artists in Moscow. The last tendency in this field is creating images in photorealistic style, which could be compared to canvas painting.
The Moscow graffiti artists are divided into two groups - the first prefer painting legally, paying strict attention to details. Creating graffiti takes them up to several days.
The second group is much more radical. They like working rapidly and illegally, placing their pieces of art in most unexpected places, where lots of people could see them.
The radical graffiti artists work all year long, despite the fact that painting graffiti in the severe Russian winter conditions is a difficult matter.
In 2009, the city authorities became interested in graffiti artists’ works. Then pieces of street art appeared on the walls of Moscow’s heating facilities.
The most experienced and sophisticated street painters make money from their hobby. They decorate clubs, shops and offices with graffiti, for some of them it is the main source of income.
There are very few places in Moscow, where graffiti can be painted legally. Lots of graffiti artists leave images on the walls of garages along the rail roads.
The main technical requirement for a good graffiti is a straight and dry surface, without layers of old paint. However many city painters neglect these requirements.
One piece of graffiti can take from several hours to several days to create.
