The United States will be assisting Kyrgyzstan in the establishment of democracy and in development of social, economic and security bodies, the U.S. Department of State said.
Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev had to flee the capital Bishkek on April 6 and later his traditional stronghold in the country's south following nationwide protests, which broke out about five years after he came to power as a result of the 2005 Tulip revolution. Bakiyev flew to neighboring Kazakhstan on Thursday and sent his letter of resignation to the interim government by fax on Friday.
"The United States remains committed to the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kyrgyz Republic and to helping the courageous Kyrgyz people achieve their aspirations for developing a peaceful, economically prosperous democracy," Philip Crowley, department's assistant secretary, said in a statement.
"The United States will continue to assist Kyrgyzstan in developing its social, economic and security structures and is in discussion with the interim Kyrgyz government on how best to help the country return to a democratic path," he added.
Crowley also said the United States welcomes all efforts by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations in cooperating with the interim Kyrgyz government to find the ways to resolve the political standoff peacefully.
