A ceremony commemorating the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen Nazi concentration camp was held in the former Nazi camp on Sunday.
German politicians and several former prisoners from Europe, the United States and Israel participated in the ceremony. Some 500 guests at the ceremony received a St. George ribbon in celebrations of VE Day, or the end of WWII on May 9.
More than 10 million St. George ribbons were distributed last year, including around 2 million abroad. Russian diasporas in many countries, including Britain, the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Iceland, Turkey, China, the United Arab Emirates, Greece and Vietnam took part in the project.
The campaign was initiated by RIA Novosti and the Student Community youth organization, commemorates the heroes of the eastern front and involves hundreds of partners in Russia and abroad.
