Two police officers were killed early on Tuesday in a shootout in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Dagetstan, a source in the republic's interior ministry said.
Unidentified assailants opened fire at a traffic police post in the city when police stopped their car for a check at about 2:00 Moscow time [23:00 GMT Monday].
"One traffic police officer was killed immediately, the other died on his way to hospital," the source said.
Attacks on police and authorities blamed on Islamist militants and criminal groups have been a frequent occurrence in Dagestan, one of Russia's poorest regions.
