A Russian scientific-educational TV channel to rival the Discovery Channel and a museum of modern science would be welcome in Russia, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday.
Responding to a proposal about launching an educational channel in Russia, Medvedev said "this should be a product that is at least at the level of the Discovery Channel."
"If it is created, it should not be just a channel as in the times of my childhood, when a man came on and started writing formulas on the blackboard. That was all shown to me in school lessons, it will not work now," he said at a joint meeting of the science and education and culture state councils.
The president also approved an idea to develop a museum of modern science on the basis of the Polytechnic Museum in Moscow.
"Businessmen came and got my blessing for this. I said: of course, go for it, this is a good deal and the museum is good. But it's old-time, there are large models in it, models of ships. This is also necessary, of course, but it will not surprise anybody anymore," Medvedev said.
He emphasized that a museum of modern science should have as many "virtual" elements as possible, "which amaze the imagination and incite the idea and desire to pursue science."
