Russian businessman Mikhail Gutseriyev, the former head of the Russneft oil company, has returned to Moscow after charges against him were dropped, a Russneft spokesperson said.

Russian businessman Mikhail Gutseriyev, the former head of the Russneft oil company, has returned to Moscow after charges against him were dropped, a Russneft spokesperson said.

"Gutseriyev is in Moscow, he is working on the company's business matters," he said. "However, he has not yet shown up in the Moscow office."

The businessman, who has spent the last three years in the UK, visited Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia last week.

Gutseriyev resigned from his position in 2007, citing "unprecedented pressure" from the Russian government. He was for a time on a police wanted list after he failed to appear for questioning on tax charges.

Some time later, tax charges against the businessman were lifted and Gutseriyev was accused instead of illegal entrepreneurship.

On April 7 2010, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed amendments to a number of legislative acts enhancing the legal protection of people involved in entrepreneurial activity and these charges were also dropped.

In October 2007, some Russian media carried reports that Gutseriyev had asked for political asylum in Britain. The reports were later denied by then British ambassador to Russia, Tony Brenton.
