Russia overpowered host Germany 3-2 in a tough battle during the first game of the qualification round at the 2010 IIHF World Championship late on Saturday.
Russia's captain Ilya Kovalchuk opened the score in the first period. The teams exchanged goals in the second period, with Germans scoring on the last second.
Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the third period, but the Germans responded almost immediately with a goal of their own.
Germans substituted the goalie for the sixth player on the ice on the last minute of the game and stormed the Russian side, but the result remained unchanged.
