Defending world champions Russia beat Finland 5:0 at the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships and will face this year's Olympic Champion Canada in the quarterfinals.
Russians have won the last two world tournaments, but disappointed at the 2010 Winter Olympics when they were thrashed by hosts Canada in the last eight.
In the match against Finland late on Tuesday, Russia's Sergei Fedorov scored the opening goal in the 17th minute of the first period. During the second period the team gained a solid 3:0 lead as Evgeni Malkin and Nikolai Kulemin added two goals within just ten seconds.
At the very beginning of the third period, the Russian team scored two more goals at the 34th minute.
The final group E standings are as follows: Russia — 15 points, Finland — 9 points, Germany — 7 points, Denmark — 6 points, Belarus — 5 points and Slovakia — 3 points.
In Thursday's other quarter-finals Finland will face Czech Republic, hosts Germany will play Switzerland and Denmark will compete against Sweden.
