A stadium accommodating 5,500 people will open in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan on Saturday, a local administration spokesman said.
The stadium, located between the republic's capital, Makhachkala, and the town of Kaspiysk, occupies the area of more than 7,000 square meters, the spokesman said.
Representatives of the republic's government, as well as cultural and public figures will take part in the opening ceremony, he said.
The 41th International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament involving athletes from more than ten countries, mainly former Soviet republics, will start at the stadium, named after well-known Dagestani boxer Ali Aliyev, on Saturday.
Dagestan, as well as other mainly Muslim North Caucasus republics, has seen an upsurge of militant violence lately, with frequent attacks on police and officials.
The Russian authorities have acknowledged a need to tackle unemployment, organized crime, clan rivalry and corruption as causes of the ongoing violence in the region.
The development of sports may also help improve the situation in the republics.
