Russia's State Academic Symphonic Orchestra will perform a concert at the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on Saturday, after which the hall will close for reconstruction for the whole season of 2010-2011, a spokeswoman for the conservatory has said.
"This will be the last concert of the 2009-2010 season to be held at the Conservatory's Grand Hall, after which it will close for reconstruction. It will open only by the XIV Tchaikovsky [music] competition, which will begin on June 14, 2011," the spokeswoman said.
The concert by the State Academic Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Mark Gorenstein will be benefit, with all collected money to be spent on the reconstruction of the Grand Hall.
Well-known Russian cellist Natalia Gutman will take part in the concert. She will perform Antonin Dvorak's Cello Concerto in H-Moll and Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5.
Rector of the Moscow Conservatory Alexander Sokolov earlier told journalists that the organ at the Grand Hall would be restored and the hall's acoustics will be significantly improved during the reconstruction.
Sokolov compared the Grand Hall with a huge violin, saying the secret of its great acoustics is in a special construction of its ceiling and floor.
