More than 100 people are feared dead as an Air India Express aircraft carrying 169 people crashed on Saturday at the airport in the country's southern port of Mangalore, the Indian media reported.
According to the Times of India newspaper, the plane overshot the runway while landing and was engulfed in flames.
The paper said the contact with the aircraft was lost at around 6.30am local time as the left wing of the plane caught fire.
The Mangalorean.com website said the Air India Express flight was coming from Dubai.
According to the website, there were 163 passengers and six crew members on board the plane.
Almost 25 ambulances have arrived at the site, the Times of India said.
