The Russian branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has sent to the State Corporation Olympstroy its remarks and proposals concerning a draft document introducing the "green" standard for the Olympic construction in Sochi, the WWF-Russia said in a statement.
The standard to be introduced at the Olympic construction is based on the international "green" construction standards BREEAM International and LEED, which fix requirements for efficient energy use and environmental protection during construction and operation of Olympic facilities.
"We support the wide use of ecological construction is Russia and Olympstroy's initiative concerning Olympic facilities in Sochi," Yevgeny Schwartz, who heads the nature conservation policy department of the WWF's Russian branch, said in the statement.
The Russian branch of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has also sent its remarks concerning the draft document to Olympstroy.
"After closely studying the standard, we would like to praise the high level of the document's elaboration and ... contents," the organization said in an attached letter, adding "this is the first case when a complex document fixing requirements for ecologically and energy efficient construction has appeared in Russia."
Gleb Vatletsov, who heads Olympstroy's department responsible for environmental protection, said "we highly appreciate the role of public organizations in accompanying preparations for the 2014 Olympics in the city of Sochi, and the possibility to rely on authoritative conclusions by experts and their help in concluding the work on the document."
The XXII Winter Olympic Games will open in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi on February 7, 2014.
Seventy-two out of 242 Olympic facilities planned to be built in Sochi are already under construction.
