Residents of Russia's republic of Bashkortostan will celebrate Sabantui, a traditional folk festival marking the end of ploughing in the fields, starting from Saturday, a spokesman for the republic's head has said.
Sabantui, which brings together many traditional games and competitions, is celebrated in Bashkortostan and another Russian republic, Tatarstan, for centuries. The name Sabantui is translated from the Tatar and Bashkir languages as "a celebration of the plough."
Traditional competitions held during the festival include horse and sack races, racing with the yoke carrying pails full of water, tug of war competitions, and traditional Tartar wrestling.
Sabantui in Bashkortostan, a republic of 4 million people located between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains, will last until the end of June.
Sabantui is expected to be included in the UNESCO's list of mankind's non-material heritage.
