The international sport forum "Russia – Country of Sports" in Moscow is set to become one of the major events in the country this year, the new head of the Russian Olympic Committee said.
The forum, scheduled for July 29-August 1, aims to promote sports, healthy lifestyles and developing Olympic values among Russians as well as improving international sports cooperation.
Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov, who also chairs the forum’s organizing committee, said this year the event will mark the 30th anniversary since Moscow held the 1980 Olympic Games.
“Certainly this [anniversary] will become a keynote for the whole forum. We hope that the forum will become one of the major sports events in the country this year,” Zhukov said.
The Olympic chief said the participants of the forum will discuss “the healthy way of life and attracting the youth to sports.”
“This is our most important goal,” he stressed.
The event will also focus on combating doping by athletes and promoting information technologies that raise the effectiveness of activity in sports.
Some 18 heads of international federations and organizations, including the president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), have confirmed their participation in the forum.
President Dmitry Medvedev is also expected to attend the event, Zhukov said.
