Russia and the United States on Friday agreed to coordinate efforts to stabilize the situation in the Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a report on Saturday.
Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin and U.S. Assistant Deputy Secretary of State George Kroll discussed the situation in Kyrgyzstan and agreed "to coordinate efforts towards stabilizing the situation in the republic."
"We discussed the situation in the Kyrgyz republic, including preparations for the forthcoming referendum on the country's new constitution [June 27] and parliamentary elections [October 10]," the report says.
Bloody uprisings swept Kyrgyzstan in early April killing over 80 people and leading to the overthrow of former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. An interim government was formed by the opposition but discontent continues, especially in the south of the country.
