Russia will send on Tuesday two planes with 80 metric tons of humanitarian aid to the ex-Soviet Central Asian republic of Tajikistan, which has suffered from a series of mudslides.

At least 24 people have been killed and 40 are missing as a result of the mudslides that hit the south of Tajikistan in early May. The disaster has damaged more than 1,500 houses, dozens of bridges, thousands of kilometers of road and some 2,500 hectares of plantations.

"On orders from the Russian government, we are sending two planes with humanitarian aid to Tajikistan on Tuesday. This will include four mobile power supply stations, 110 tents and food supplies," a spokesman for the Russian Emergencies Ministry said on Monday.

The Tajik authorities asked for Russian assistance during a meeting of CIS leaders in St. Petersburg on May 22.
