The leading German auto maker, Volkswagen, plans to sell a new model in Russia from September 2010. The car will be designed specifically for Russia’s roads.
“The new Polo was developed specifically for the Russian market. It was designed for Russian roads,” Ulrich Hackenberg, a Volkswagen brand technical development director, said on June 2 during the presentation of the model.
The Volkswagen dealer network will begin accepting orders on June 4 and will start selling the model right after the Moscow International Auto Show in September.
The no-frills Polo will cost 399,000 rubles (10,500 Euros). The car will feature a new 1.6 liter gas engine putting out 105-hp.
Volkswagen had previously announced that the new car would be assembled at its Russian plant, Volkswagen Group Rus in Kaluga. This is an economy-class sedan based on the German model Polo adapted for the Russian market.
Volkswagen, founded in 1937, is the largest European manufacturer and one of the world’s largest car makers. Its plant in Kaluga produces passenger vehicles under the Volkswagen (Passat, Polo, Jetta, Tiguan, Touareg, Passat CC) and Skoda (Octavia, Octavia Tour, Fabia, Superb) brands. In July 2009 the plant began assembling two new models, the Caddy and the Transporter. As of July 1, 2009, the project received 570 million Euros in investment. The total amount of investment under a cooperation agreement totaled 750 million Euros.
