Earlier on Friday, former Finance Minister Naoto Kan was made head of Japan's ruling Democratic Party and the country's 94th prime minister.

The cabinet of ministers' was supposed to be formed on Friday, but only one appointment has so far been made: the post of general secretary has been offered to former National Strategy Minister Yoshito Sengoku.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama stepped down as premier on Wednesday and his entire Cabinet resigned en masse earlier on Friday.
