Russian President Dmitry Medvedev instructed the government on Tuesday to draw up proposals on reducing the number of federal officials by 20%.
"I am directing you to prepare proposals on this subject. I know that this has already been partially discussed in the government. We need to see the final result and only then can we make a decision," Medvedev said.
He said Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Kudrin had told him there was a proposal to reduce the number of officials by 20%.
"Needless to say, this is rather a tough measure, which can help deal with a number of issues. At the same time, such decisions cannot be made mechanically or be based purely on financial considerations," the president said.
