Two Dutch towns have devised a creative way of tackling unemployment by providing incentives for jobless women to find rich partners, a local daily reported on Tuesday.
DutchNews.nl quoted the Leeuwarder Courant as saying the Frisian villages of Dongeradeel and Dantumadiel are paying for women "to have a makeover in the hope they can hook up with a rich husband to support them."
If 70 women find husbands to support them, the local council will save around $600,000 on welfare payments.
The local councils will invest 1,400 Euros in hair cuts, new clothes and advice on social skills and presentation for each unemployed woman.
When their makeovers are finished, the women will be registered at a local marriage bureau.
"So far fewer than 10 women have signed up for the scheme, which has been described as 'unethical' by many locals," the paper said.
