An international judge has died in the Estonian capital of Tallinn after being hit in the head by a javelin hurled by an athlete during a track and field event, a spokesman for the Estonian Track and Field Athletics Union said.

The incident took place at Tallinn's Audentes Stadium on May 12. Edgar Aavik, 77, pulled the javelin from his head himself and was then taken from the field by ambulance to a hospital. After arriving at the hospital, he lost consciousness.

Competition organizers blame Aavik for the incident saying he was standing in the wrong place at the designated javelin throw sector of the field.
