Israel on Thursday welcomed a UN Security Council resolution on new sanctions against Iran and called for further steps to halt the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.
"The resolution demonstrates to Iran that the leading world powers oppose its nuclear program...We hope this positive step will be continued by more decisive actions aimed at Iran's energy sector by individual countries," a statement released by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office read.
"It is crucial to achieve a fully-fledged and immediate implementation of the resolution," an Israeli Foreign Ministry statement said, adding that "the resolution on its own is insufficient."
The UN Security Council on Wednesday approved a new package of economic sanctions against Iran over its controversial nuclear program.
Twelve members of the council's 15 members voted for the resolution, which was sponsored by the five permanent members of the Security Council - the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia.
Turkey and Brazil, which recently brokered a uranium exchange deal with Iran, voted against, while Lebanon abstained.
