Members of the Shintop Trophy 2010 expedition, or three crews from Vladivostok, Omsk and Novosibirsk, hope to set a Russian record and earn a place in Guinness World Records by floating down the Kolyma River in floating cars.
The Maritime crew set off from the Korabelnaya Embankment, Vladivostok. Before a large crowd, Artyom Kanivets, the expedition leader, and his friends took a few minutes to convert their standard SUV into a pontooned floating truck.
The three crews will meet in Yakutsk, and on July 1 will set off towards the Arctic Ocean. The first leg is on dry ground as far as Seimchan, Magadan Region. From there they will float down the Kolyma to where it empties into the East Siberian Sea.
The expedition will cover 1,500 km on water, and 2,500 km overland.
