With all the ballots counted, acting Polish president Bronislaw Komorowski has gained 41,54% of the vote in the country's presidential elections and will face a runoff against his main opponent Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the country's National Election Commission has said.
Komorowski, a pro-EU, moderate member of the governing Civic Platform party, was made acting president after a host of senior Polish officials including President Lech Kaczynski died in a plane crash in western Russia in April.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the late Polish president's twin brother, who leads the conservative Law and Justice party, has received 36,46% of the vote. He was quick to congratulate his opponent on the victory.
Grzegorz Napieralski, the 36-year-old leader of the Democratic Left Alliance, is running third, with 13.68% of the vote. Other candidates have garnered less then 3%. The runoff is scheduled for July 4.
Three exit polls released late on Sunday estimated the gap between Komorowski and Kaczynski to be between 5 and 12.5%.
Almost 55% of Poles eligible to vote cast ballots on Sunday to elect their new president.
