Kiev hosted its first Red Bull Flugtag air show, which attracted 60,000 spectators to watch 20 teams from all over Ukraine compete.

The homemade flying machines in the shapes of an outhouse, a tin can, an ear of corn, a cigar, a frying pan, an omelet and a car were launched over the Rusanovsky Canal.

The team that built and flew the Kuzkina Mat flying machine received the most points. The team’s aircraft was designed to be a cropduster made with an ear of corn instead of a fuselage. The Kuzkina Mat flew a distance of twelve meters. In September, the crew will compete in the Red Bull Air Races final, which will take place in Lisbon.

The Flying Ax flew the longest distance of 22 meters.

All flying machines were made of everyday materials.

A wide variety of materials was used, including metal, wood, film and flowers.

Aviators aged 18 to 51 took part in the festival, including students and members of parliament.

According to the rules of the contest, participants must build up speed down a six-meter ramp and then fly into the water.

Happily, no pilots were seriously injured during the festival. The same could not be said of the aircraft. Divers had to collect some of the wreckage.

The flights were judged in three categories: flight length, aircraft originality and creativity of the team’s performance.
