The Mexican agriculture minister will fly to Moscow on June 28 to discuss increasing meat supplies to Russia.

Francisco Mayorga told RIA Novosti he hoped Russia would allow imports of more Mexican poultry, pork and beef.

"The quality of Mexican meat is recognized throughout the world, and it meets the highest sanitary standards," the minister said.

Mayorga will be accompanied by 38 Mexican agriculture business representatives on his four-day visit to Russia.

"Mexico is interested in purchasing mineral fertilizers and wheat from Russia. We are committed to mutually beneficial cooperation with Moscow," the minister said.

He said he planned to discuss with Russian Economy Minister Elvira Nabiullina "concrete issues" relating to meat supplies to Russia, as well as the import of fruit and vegetables.

Mayorga said Mexico's exports to Russia accounted for $16 million in 2009 and the country purchased food products worth $2 million from Russia in the same year. He said, however, that these figures do not include bilateral trade carried out via intermediaries.

"We pin high hopes on the forthcoming visit to Russia and hope it will serve not only to expand economic and trade relations between our countries, but also cooperation in the hi-tech sphere, including agricultural equipment and machinery," he said.

During his stay in Russia, Mayorga will also visit the country's second city of St. Petersburg, where he will meet with Governor Valentina Matviyenko.
