The nature reserve was founded on June 30, 1925, on the initiative of the residents of Krasnoyarsk to preserve the natural areas around picturesque syenite outliers, “stolby.”

The rocky giants, which are open for tourists, are referred to as “Stolby” while their counterparts located deep in the nature reserve, where access is limited, are called “Dikye Stolby” (wild).
