Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin assessed on Monday six best projects of a monument which will be built in Moscow in memory of the demolished Georgian Glory Memorial.
Putin said he liked all the projects. “All of them are good, talented and keep in line with the theme,” the Russian prime minister said.
At the same time, the premier pointed to the project, which depicts the hoisting of a Victory Banner over the Reichstag in Berlin. Putin asked if the monument to the soldiers who raised the Soviet flag, Mikhail Yegorov and Meliton Kantaria, exists today and received a negative answer.
The six projects of the monument, We Were Together in the Fight Against Fascism, were chosen out 25 other works by an expert commission. The vote for the projects was held over the Internet and in the Museum of the Great Patriotic War where they were exhibited. More than 50,000 Internet users voted for the best project over a month.
The organizers of the contest told Putin they would like to build the full-size monument by December 19, the day when the Glory Memorial was demolished in Kutaisi, Georgia, last year. They said the results of the contest will be announced in several days and the expert council will analyze the possibilities of launching the construction.
The Russian premier was shown more than 1,500 responses about the monument projects sent by Internet users. The organizers of the contest said the vote is absolutely open both in Russia and Georgia.
The Glory Memorial built in Kutaisi in early 1980s was demolished on December 19, 2009. The Georgian authorities said they wanted to build a new parliament building at that place. Two people, including an eight-year-old girl, died and several others were injured during the explosion as safety rules were neglected.
