Record high temperatures in Moscow this summer are causing a serious increase in the poplar moth.

Record high temperatures in Moscow this summer are causing a serious increase in the poplar moth.

Average temperatures in Moscow and its surrounding area have exceeded 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit) since mid-June. Forecasts for the coming week say temperatures may rise as high as 37 degrees (99 Fahrenheit).

"Swarms of moths appear in the evenings. They somehow manage to get into the house even if all the windows are closed," a Moscow resident said.

The Moscow authorities are attempting to control the outbreak.

"The attack is widespread. Specialists are trying to eliminate the moth," an official said, adding that it was useless for residents to attempt to tackle to moth swarms on their own.
