A police officer has been killed in the volatile Russian republic of Dagestan, a local police spokesman said on Monday.
"The incident occurred at around 16.30 Moscow time (12.30 GMT) in the village of Gubden near a local police station. Unidentified assailants driving a Russian-made car opened fire at police officer Rasul Magomedov, who died from shot wounds," the spokesman said.
The spokesman said Rasul was the only son of Abdula Magomedov, a local police chief who was killed in December 2008. Abdula's widow, sister and daughter died in an explosion in a cemetery when they were attending his grave.
Rasul was awarded the Order of Courage several days before.
Sporadic attacks on troops and police officials are common in Russia's southern mainly Muslim republics in the North Caucasus, especially Dagestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia.
