Construction of the Main Press Center for the 1980 Summer Olympic Games was launched in Moscow in 1976. The building currently houses the News & Information Agency RIA Novosti.A 30,000 square meter construction site was allotted on Garden Ring to impress foreigners and to accommodate Soviet information giant Novosti Press Agency after the Olympics.
A system of inter-linked courtyards and gallery passes along the building’s perimeter was chosen to create architectural harmony with the nearby 19th century Food Warehouse buildings.
Apart from specially equipped sectors for journalists, several conference rooms, including a 780-seat cinema and concert hall, were constructed at the Main Olympic Press Center.
The main agency newsroom, now housing the Information Directorate, was the first to be modernized. Entirely new premises were created for journalists in 2008, when the agency began to prioritize the multimedia format. This made it possible to quickly process any type of information.
There are plans to rebuild the main agency entrance and all the main press centers under a reconstruction plan proposed by the ARCH-4 architectural studio.
