High temperatures have changed the usual course of people's lives in Central Russia and Moscow, forcing the army to dress down and the city residents to take shelter under umbrellas.
Meteorologists do not have reassuring news for Muscovites, saying the heat will reach 33-37 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) at the weekend.
According to the sanitary norms, if the air temperature at work reaches 30 degrees Celsius, the working day cannot exceed five hours, at 31 degrees - 3 hours, 32 degrees - 2 hours, 32.5 degrees - 1 hour.
The heat wave also caused damage to the agricultural sector in 14 regions of Russia. A state of emergency has been declared in the Ivanovo Region because of the drought. The estimated damage has reached 100 million rubles (about $33 million).
In the Chelyabinsk region in Russia’s Urals, damage from the drought may reach 8 billion rubles (about $267 million).
The company responsible for freeway construction near Moscow has started to cut down trees in the Khimki forest in the northwest of the capital. Ecologists say the construction of the new freeway may severely aggravate the ecological situation.
The Moscow region is seized by peat fires that cause a suffocating smell throughout the city.
The area of the fires in 2010 increased fourfold year-on-year.
