NATO troops have seized 2 tons of heroin in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, the press office of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Sunday.
The drugs were discovered during a combat operation against a local Taliban militant commander, the press office said.
The NATO troops also found a large amount of ammonium nitrate, a substance that Taliban militants use to prepare explosive devices, the press office said.
Afghan drug production increased dramatically after the U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Taliban in 2001.
Russia, which has suffered a steep rise in heroin consumption, has been one of the countries most affected by the increase.
