Farnborough International Airshow 2010 has finally produced the most expected sensation of recent years: the American Boeing-787 Dreamliner, which arrived in the United Kingdom for the first time.
The 787 Dreamliner is a wide-bodied twin-engined passenger plane that can seat up to 300 travelers and fly long distances. The most environmentally friendly airliner has become the first new project of the corporation for almost the past ten years.
For now, the corporation has over 860 firm orders from 56 air companies. The first planes are expected to reach their customers and begin regular flights at the end of the year.
The first to receive the airliners will be Japan’s All Nippon Airways, and the first to start operating them in the United Kingdom will be national charter company Thomson Airways.
More than half the plane’s components are made of light composites, making it one of the most environmentally friendly airliners. The manufacturer also promises that lower fuel consumption will make long-range travel less costly.
In the test group, two liners will be equipped with General Electric Genx engines, and the others will get Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 units. Reporters have already dubbed the superliner a “sky limousine.”
But the most important thing for the new airliner is increased passenger comfort. It has every facility to make flying pleasant and comfortable and reduce jet lag.
The main distinctive feature of the passenger cabin is that its windows are three times larger than in a conventional passenger liner. Manually adjusted lights allow the passenger to regulate the amount of illumination.
The passenger cabin has better regulated lights, a new system for air filtration, and even a lower pressure, which makes long-distance travel a pleasure.
The new 787 has 12% higher fuel efficiency than the Boeing-777. In operation the new plane will consume 20% less fuel than other state-of-the-art liners of the same class.
