Last week hot air balloons were dancing in the sky over the Yaroslavl Region, where sixteen Russian and Ukrainian crews gathered for the ninth annual Golden Ring of Russia festival. The organizers reported that ten metric tons of propane had been burnt during the festival, held from July 14 to July 18.
Flying hot air balloons is not a cheap hobby. A Russian-manufactured balloon costs up to 1.5 billion rubles. This is in addition to the SUV needed to transport the basket, burner, ventilator and canopy, which together cost the same as the hot air balloon itself. In addition, there is the cost of transporting all this equipment.
The first Golden Ring of Russia festival was held in 2002. Its name is symbolic: The festival is held in two ancient Russian towns, Pereslavl-Zalessky and Rostov Veliky, which are part of the famous tourist route the Golden Ring.
