A man trying to protect his pregnant wife from an aggressive swan drowned in Riga, the capital of Latvia, the country's fire and rescue service said on Thursday.
The woman was swimming in a river and came too close to a group of swans, when one of the birds attacked her.
The man rushed into the water to save his wife from the aggressive swan, but the bird turned its aggression on him.
During the struggle, the man went underwater and other people relaxing along the river rushed to his aid to pull him onto the bank.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene were unable to resuscitate the man. His wife suffered no injuries.
