Fidel Castro, Cuba's 83-year-old revolutionary leader, released his new memoir recollecting the moments from 1958 when young revolutionaries liberated the island from Fulgencio Batista's regime, Cuban media said on Tuesday.
Castro, surrounded by the members of the Cuban Revolution, presented the 896-page memoir titled "The Strategic Victory" at the Havana International Convention Center.
In 1953, a group of young revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro attempted to seize the Moncada Barracks on the east of the island. After an abortive assault, they were put into prison but later pardoned due to public pressure.
The operation led by Castro failed but Cubans view it as the beginning of the revolution that ousted Dictator Fulgencio Batista and put Castro in power in 1959.
The Comandante has rarely been seen in public since he underwent intestinal surgery in 2006 and ceded power to his younger brother, Raul.
Despite his age and state of the health, Castro spent over an hour reading extracts from the book traditionally opposing highly moral Cuban rebels to unscrupulous Batista army.
He said one of the main weapons of young guerrillas was truth since "speaking the truth was the main principle that has always been justified."
In July, ahead of the 57th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, Castro also released a CD with a collection of his articles from the CubaDebate website.
Castro's column reflects his thoughts on global political events and is usually full of praise for his allies, but critical of U.S. leaders.
