The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency got its first ever female boss today when Letitia Long was confirmed as director, U.S. media said.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates chose Long, who has held important posts in her 32 years of service in U.S. intelligence, for the position in February.

The agency "develops imagery and map-based intelligence solutions for U. S. national defense, homeland security and safety of navigation," according to its website.

A spokesperson for one of the U.S. intelligence agencies said women make up 38% of the total intelligence work force.
