Traditionally on August 10-12, the residents of the Irish community of Killorglin in the county of Kerry, celebrate the Puck Fair street festival.
There are several legends about the origins of the Fair. The most widespread tells the story of goat that was frightened to death upon seeing Scandinavian invaders. The scared creature rushed towards Killorglin.
The arrival of the exhausted animal alerted the inhabitants of approaching danger and they immediately set about protecting themselves and their stock.
The fair is now a family holiday when people meet with close friends and make new acquaintances. During the festival, there are days of reconciliation when the Irish make peace with those with whom they are at loggerheads.
